Wilderness Survival Campout

Monday, April 23, 2001

All of the scouts and most of the dads survived our Wilderness Survival Campout at the Flerlage farm. Many thanks go to Stan for his gracious hospitality towards us and his strong support of scouting.

We set up tents Friday evening, and prepared a nice fire. We had periods of high winds and intermittent rain overnight. In the morning we prepared our first meal without cooking utensils. The boys whittled sticks into makeshift forks, and several scouts worked with Mr. Stevenot to cut round "plates" off a log with the two-man bucksaw.

Cooking bacon on a flat rock proved to be rather time-consuming! One thing that worked well was cooking eggs, onion, & cheese inside a hollowed-out bell pepper. We wrapped the pepper in foil, & set it on the coals. In about 15-20 minutes, it was perfect!

After breakfast we hiked down the hill to a flat flood plain next to a creek. There we set up our shelters using tarps & rope. Strong winds throughout the day really tested our shelters, but all of them held up well.

The younger boys had fun finding craydads & salamanders in the creek while the older boys & Mr. Disser assembled a kayak from saplings, grapevines, a tarp, bungie cords & duct tape!

Mr. Furthmiller & Mr. Stegman gave a black powder shooting demonstration, with a 50 caliber rifle & a 12 ga. double-barreled shotgun.

Next several boys tried out the kayak on the small pond. Only one boy took an unexpected swim!

Prior to dinner the younger scouts worked on earning their Totin' Chip. All the boys also had fun throwing the tomahawks at a large log. For dinner Mr. Stevenot directed some boys to scrounge dandelion leaves, clover, cattail roots, & wild onion to make "crawdad stew". All of it was greedily consumed, so it must have been pretty good. Mr. Dorger, Mr. Horn & Mr. Humason did a great job preparing some Cornish Hens to roast over the fire. Many of the boys cooked hamburgers in foil on the coals.

The wind calmed down as we settled into our shelters, and we sleep soundly until a wild turkey woke us up in the morning!

Mr. Flerlage gave each scout a turkey feather & a Kentucky Horse Park pin as a memento for the weekend. His kindness & generosity will not be soon forgotten!
