Summer Camp 2010

Posted by Jim Stegman, 2/16/04 at 9:53:02 AM.

Summer Camp 2010 WHERE: Kroger Campsite, Camp Friedlander, Loveland Ohio WHEN: Sunday July 11 noon (NMPC Parking lot) until Saturday July 17 10 AM (Camp Parking Lot) Council has information about Summer Camp on their website at: http://www.danbeard.org/campfriedlander.aspx We encourage all the boys to go to Camp. If cost is an issue, please see Don, Ernst, or any other Committee Member. The Troop has a scholarship fund which can help you. We have many opportunities for Scouts to earn money, including the Christmas Greens sale, Dutch Bulb sale, & year-round use of Kroger Gift Cards. Scouts can easily pay for a large portion of their camp fees by participating in any or all of these. Council also has a Campership program that can provide financial assistance. Follow the [base "]Dates & Fees[per thou] link on the Council website for more information. Please do not let cost keep your son from Summer Camp. The cost of the Camp this year has gone up, to $205 per Scout, and adults (18 years old & up) are free. Camp requires that we have a minimum of 2 adults at camp at all times. If you are interested in spending a night or more at camp, you are most welcome! We are blessed to have very well-behaved boys and they pretty much take care of themselves. Our campsite is next to a modern bathroom facility with private bathrooms and hot water showers! Camp also has a program to place individual Scouts with other Troops throughout the Summer. I would not recommend this for 1st or 2nd year Scouts. Some boys elect to go an additional week, with a Troop of their choosing or as an individual Scout. Additional weeks cost only $155. See me for more details. Here is a list of important dates for Summer Camp: Tuesday, Feb. 2nd: $65 Deposit Due Sunday, Mar. 21st: Leader[base ']s Orientation Dinner Monday, Mar. 22nd: Merit Badge sign-up begins (9 AM) Tuesday, Apr. 6th: $65 Payment Due Monday, Apr. 12th: Campership Application due to Scout Service Center Tuesday, May 11th: Balance: $75 + High-Adventure activity fees (see below) Tuesday, Jun. 1st: Troop Summer Camp Meeting Tuesday, Jun. 1st: Health Forms Due All payments may be made from Scout Accounts or by check made out to [base "]Troop 857[per thou]. We cannot schedule your classes until the deposit is received. Mr. Gebhardt will give you a schedule sheet when you make your deposit, and Mr. Cecil will help you fill out your schedule. If the Scout is participating in a High-Adventure activity such as Powderhorn or COPE, payment for those activities are also due in April. Also Snorkeling, SCUBA, Rifle MB, Shotgun MB, & Plumbing MB have additional fees. See the Council website for these fees. Also a new program available to older scouts is the Voyager Program. This consists of activities away from camp, including canoeing, mountain biking, backpacking and caving. Scout participating in the Voyager program will not be able to complete Merit Badges at camp, since they will be away the majority of the time.

We strongly encourage all Scouts to attend camp.

Our newest Scouts are encouraged to earn the Swimming Merit Badge if they are capable swimmers. Otherwise we encourage them to take Instructional Swimming. Also we encourage new Scouts to attend the First Year Camper program. Typically new Scouts attending this program advance one rank during the week, while learning valuable Scouting skills and the Patrol Method.

Activity Sign Up
Scouts must sign up for activities ahead of Summer Camp. We will begin sign ups in March. Activities do sometimes fill up, and they are filled on a first-come-first served basis, so it is important to do this early. Don't worry, you can change your mind later (subject to availability).

2nd Week of Summer Camp
Last year we had a 2nd week of summer camp, which allowed many boys to earn additional Merit Badges. We need at least 2 Adults who are willing to stay at camp with the boys. If we do not have enough adults for a second week, boys can always sign up for a second week anyway, and will be placed with a different Troop during the week. We recommend that boys go with a buddy to ensure a good experience.

Scouts who are age 14 and above may wish to consider serving on the Camp Friedlander Staff for the summer. This is a paid position, and allows a Scout to gain valuable experience.

We will be providing more information about Camp as we receive it, in the meantime consult the Camp Friedlander website for more information.

We now have the Leaders Guide available for download in pdf format.
