AppleVention Seminar
We led a discussion & demonstration by creating a weblog at the Cincinnati AppleVention held on 10/21/2000. This is an outline of the steps I went through, so you can follow at your own pace.
- What's a weblog? Let's look at two examples:
- The local Ulster Project of Cincinnati shows how a small organization can use a weblog as a communcation tool with it's members.
- A View from an Iowa Homestead is a nice on-line diary of one man's life.
- Now I'll call EOS & they'll set me up... Wait a minute! I am EOS! Here is a picture of the setup process.
- The generic weblog has a number of features provided auto-magically.
- Now I log in.
- This design is kind of boring. What can I do to make it look better? We look at Themes and the various Appearance Prefs here and here.
- Enough fluff, smoke & mirrors! Let's add some content! Create a story, that will become our links page.
- Suppose we want to add some more content (in this case, some more links) at a later time? Click on the Edit This Page button.
- Now it is easy to link to this new page or story, using a Shortcut.
- Now let's add a picture to the weblog.
- We can even use some HTML in our weblog, but we can do alot without it.
- We've only touched the surface, but hopefully you get the idea. Here is a link to the ManilaNewbies User Guide if you want to know more about weblogs. Manila is the name of the server software that makes weblogs happen! Manila is brought to you by the good folks at Userland Software.
