The Future of The World Is Nuts!(TM)

Hah. You betcha. Though they are just as much Owl roosts as Hawk. This is our newest roost- put up one day before the Field Day- out in the distant hazels. Driving home from chestnut harvest (yes, after dark) I managed to catch this guy-
Yeah, it's grainy- YOU try catching an owl after dark with just a plain digital camera! This is at my maximum physical zoom; and it took a 1 second exposure- I had to sneak up (in the truck) and rest the camera on the top of the truck. The chestnut trees are thrashing in the wind, and the stars are out. Chances are high this is a Barred Owl- it's big enough to be a Great Horned; we have both; but the posture is more Barredish. Maybe.
Notice he's sitting on kind of the lowest roost point- out on the tip of a branch. Ignoring the nice high cross-bar. Remember raptors are not in fact humans, and what YOU think they'd like is often irrelevant. Both owls and hawks will cheerfully sit on a pointy branch tip- what they want is room for the wings; and options. This same owl may sit on the very top tomorrow- when there's no wind. The options will keep them coming back.
