The Future of The World Is Nuts!(TM)

Working as fast as we can. Getting plants shipped out is still slow- not helped by the rain and cool weather recently.
Something that DOES help is having Brandon Rutter here for a while to lend a hand. Of course, that mean a bunch of old chores now come to the top of the pile, while he's available.
One of the urgent chores has been to get the new hickory/pecan hybrids analyzed, and thinned. While they're all thin shelled, some of them are better than others, and typical of our plantings, they're way too thick - (that's intentional; forces us to thin).
Brandon and I have been tackling the nuts together on the rainy days. Here's what we found yesterday-
It's a thin shelled hybrid hickory/pecan that has a few nuts with 3 "halves". Not a huge number, but more than a couple.
Has anyone else seen a hickory or pecan that regularly produces 3-lobed nuts?
This is what the nut looks like from the outside end- it's obvious-
I'm not sure there's any particular advantage to this character as it stands- but it tends to illustrate the unusual characteristics that start to show up in advanced species hybrids; and might lead to a breeding strain where the exact shape of the nut meat is rather easily rearranged.
